Let’s talk about a topic that upsets me deeply. In my opinion, feminism has been turned into something it is definitely not. A war against men. The word probably brings out more bad connotations to many, the kind where rolling your eyes would seem like a proper response. But please hear me out. It is not at all like that. Feminism should not be about trash-talking men and praising women higher than them. Actually, it is a call for help. And I’m glad that it’s turning louder and louder.
Most important to mention is that is it a cry for EQUALITY. Please let that sink in. The real and righteous feminists (male and female obviously) just want to make you aware, that us women still do not have equal rights to men. I am aware that we already are very lucky in Europe and the Western World and have rights, that women in many other countries cannot yet enjoy. But working in the exact same job as a man and still earning less because our bodies where biologically designed to have the babies, still does not make sense to me. Without men, these babies would not even be made, so they’re just as responsible. Furthermore, these babies always form the next generation and enhance the future’s economy in 20 years. So why punish us women, instead of supporting us (financially) when we need it the most? The economy anyways benefits from it a few years later.
I am a never-ending optimist and I do firmly believe that together we can make it happen. But make what happen exactly? What can we do if the laws do not change, yet? More than you think, believe me! By being conscious of your language towards women, for example, you can make a difference already. Another important aspect is informing yourself about the situation. Being aware of problems that women have to face (often alone) makes you more cautious of judging people at first sight.
Predominately, it is crucial to understand the roots of feminism, to not mistake it for something it is not. Nobody should have to feel ashamed for calling themselves a feminist.
“And since we all came from a woman
Tupac Shakur
Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?
I think it’s time to kill for our women
Time to heal our women, be real to our women”
